Ichthyologist, researcher and diver
from Altamira, Brazil
Leandro Melo de Sousa is an ichthyologist and Professor of Biology at the Universidade Federal do Pará (UFPA), right in front of the Xingu rapids. Leandro does extensive field trips with local fishermen to try to understand the amazing loricariid diversity found in this place.
He goes scuba diving in the depths of the Xingu and other Amazonian Rivers to study and register the fishes, the rocks they live on and how different biotopes influence their distribution. Since 2014, he coordinates a Conservational Breeding Project of Xingu Endemic species at the University (ictioxingu), focused mainly on Hypancistrus zebra and other Loricariidae.
Leandro’s YouTube channel is a reliable source of the information about fauna and flora of the Amazon basin, and it reflects a profound knowledge on southamerican freshwater biotopes and their aquatic inhabitants.
