Brachyhypopomus cf. pinnicaudatus is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish that lives in tropical climates. Native to French Guiana, it is now present in eastern South America and in the Amazon River basin in Peru. It lives in stagnant water with low conductivity, associated with emergent and floating vegetation. It can also occur along the shallow edges of streams.
