Rio Demini, Lower Rio Negro, Brazil

Sponsored by

Brazil, Amazonas, Barcelos

The 95L aquarium is constructed of a fine beige sand substrate, small dried seeds and leaves, as well as branches and a trunk. The branches are positioned to simulate the root systems of trees and other terrestrial plants in the waterline.

The system also has the plant Epipremnum aureum positioned at the waterline, growing in a completely natural and unordered way in the aquarium, with its roots completely submerged, helping to create hiding places for the inhabitants.

Aquarium information

Aquarium description

Set-up date
April, 2024
Aquarium decoration

The substrate used is fine sand with a slightly yellowish color. On top of it, small Psidium guajava trunks complement the scenery, bringing the idea of decomposing leftovers from fallen trees. Some botanicals also offer greater environmental enrichment.

On the surface, the roots of Epipremnum aureum meet the water and become submerged, feeding on the organic compounds in the system.

Aquarium equipment

Filtration: rear sump with a 1000L/h pump using the minimum flow rate (500L/h). The system also has about 2l of biological media and foam for collecting solid waste.

Fish care

A diet rich in animal proteins from Tenebrio and feed made from 50% BSF (Black Soldier Fly) and proteins and vitamins.

Fishlist:

  • Paracheirodon innesi (Characidae)
  • Laetacara curviceps (Cichlidae)
  • Mikrogeophagus ramirezi (Cichlidae)
Plant care

Conventional 30w led lamp with 6500k is used.

Aquatic plants:

  • Echinodorus grisebachii ‘Amazonicus’ (Alismataceae)
  • Hygrophila corymbosa (Acanthaceae)
Water care

For water, a water replacement product is used that removes chlorine, heavy metals and adds Aloe vera. In this system, there are no partial water changes.
