Recognizing Contributions to Freshwater Biodiversity Documentation
The BAP Scientific Participation Certificate is issued by the Biotope Aquarium Project (BAP) to recognize meaningful contributions to the documentation of freshwater habitats, biodiversity, and ecological knowledge through citizen science.
The certificate provides participants — particularly students, early-career naturalists, and citizen scientists — with documented evidence of their engagement in activities related to habitat observation, biodiversity reporting, and scientific documentation of natural freshwater environments.
BAP aims to bridge the gap between citizen science and academic research by encouraging high-quality ecological documentation and promoting responsible environmental awareness.
About the Biotope Aquarium Project
The Biotope Aquarium Project (BAP) is an international initiative dedicated to documenting freshwater biotopes — natural habitats defined by specific environmental conditions and characteristic species communities.
The project operates as a citizen-science platform, bringing together aquarists, naturalists, researchers, and biodiversity enthusiasts who contribute structured observations of freshwater habitats and associated species. These contributions help document ecological characteristics of natural environments and improve public understanding of freshwater biodiversity.
Through its online platform, BAP hosts habitat descriptions, species information, and the BAP-Map, a growing international atlas of documented freshwater biotopes.
By combining community participation with expert review, the project aims to encourage responsible ecological observation and promote awareness of freshwater ecosystems.

Purpose of the Certificate
The BAP Scientific Participation Certificate aims to:
- acknowledge verified contributions to freshwater habitat documentation
- encourage participation in biodiversity observation and citizen science
- support educational engagement with ecological research
- provide participants with formal documentation of their scientific involvement
The certificate may be included in academic portfolios, scholarship applications, or university admissions documentation as evidence of extracurricular scientific activity related to biodiversity and environmental studies.
Eligible Activities
Participants may qualify for a BAP Scientific Participation Certificate through activities such as:
- documentation of natural freshwater habitats (biotopes)
- submission of structured habitat descriptions
- biodiversity observation and species reporting
- participation in BAP documentation initiatives or competitions
- contribution to the BAP-Map or associated databases
Contributions should follow the documentation standards established by the project.
Scientific Review and Validation
To ensure the reliability of information, contributions considered for certification may undergo review by experienced members of the BAP expert community.
The validation process may include:
- verification of habitat documentation
- review of ecological descriptions
- confirmation of species identification where applicable
This review process helps maintain the scientific integrity of the project while encouraging responsible citizen-science participation.
Information Included in the Certificate
Each BAP Scientific Participation Certificate includes:
- participant name
- description of the documented contribution or activity
- type of participation (e.g., habitat documentation, biodiversity observation, project participation)
- contribution details and associated project reference
- year or reference event
- confirmation of expert review or validation within the BAP scientific framework
- certificate identification number (Certificate ID)
- QR code linking to the online verification or project reference page
- date of issuance
- signature of the BAP Project Coordinator
- signature of the Expert Reviewer
Where relevant, certificates may also reference the geographic region, freshwater ecosystem type, or ecological context of the documented habitat.
When applicable, the certificate may also display the logo of an institutional patron or collaborating academic institution.
Educational Value
Participation in BAP activities supports the development of skills relevant to environmental and biological sciences, including:
- ecological observation
- habitat analysis
- biodiversity documentation
- environmental awareness
- scientific reporting and communication
These skills are closely aligned with academic fields such as:
- ecology
- biology
- ichthyology
- conservation science
- environmental studies
- biodiversity research
Important Note
The BAP Scientific Participation Certificate documents participation in a scientifically curated citizen-science initiative.
It does not imply academic credit, preferential admission, or formal recognition by any educational institution. Evaluation of such activities remains entirely at the discretion of universities, scholarship programs, or educational organizations.
How to Request a Certificate
Participants who have made meaningful contributions to the Biotope Aquarium Project may request a BAP Scientific Participation Certificate.
To request a certificate, please send an email including the following information:
1. Personal information
- Full name
- Country of residence
2. Description of your contribution
Please briefly describe your participation in BAP, such as:
- documented biotope(s)
- species observations or biodiversity reports
- participation in BAP competitions or documentation initiatives
- contributions to the BAP Map
3. Supporting links or references
If available, please include links to your relevant BAP contributions (for example habitat pages, submissions, or project entries).
Requests should be sent to:
certificate@biotopeaquariumproject.com
Subject line:
BAP Scientific Participation Certificate Request
Review Process
Each request will be reviewed to confirm that the documented activity meets the participation standards of the Biotope Aquarium Project.
Where appropriate, contributions may be reviewed by members of the BAP expert community to verify documentation quality and ecological relevance.
Certificate Issuance
If the contribution meets the project criteria, the participant will receive a digital certificate (PDF) containing the information listed above.
Certificates are typically issued within 2–4 weeks after review.
