Nature, Science and Hands-On Learning

The BIOTOPE AQUARIUM Project (BAP) presents a special educational collaboration with TiCinema Film Festival® Pavia: interactive workshops for children where participants explore the Amazon ecosystem and create their own real biotope aquarium.

The experience combines biodiversity, creativity and practical learning in an engaging and memorable format.

Location

The workshops are hosted at the historic Canottieri Ticino Pavia, an elegant venue overlooking the Ticino River.

Its natural setting creates the perfect atmosphere for activities focused on water, ecosystems and environmental education.

Featured Workshop

Amazonia in Aquarium – The Rio Negro Biotope

A guided experience introducing children to one of the most fascinating freshwater habitats in the world.

Duration: around 2 hours
Recommended age: 8–10 years
Participants: maximum 15 per session

Program Structure

Before the Workshop

Participants and families can access dedicated online materials through the official BAP website, designed to prepare children for the experience.

Pre-workshop resources include:

  • Introduction to Amazonia
  • What a biotope is
  • How aquariums recreate ecosystems
  • Workshop guidance and preparation

During the Workshop

Multimedia Introduction

Children explore:

  • Images and videos of the Amazon rainforest
  • The Rio Negro and its famous blackwater habitat
  • What a natural biotope means

Simplified Scientific Session

Young participants learn about:

  • Tropical biodiversity
  • Balance of aquatic ecosystems
  • Respect for animals and nature

Practical Activity

Each participant personally creates a complete mini aquarium including:

  • Glass aquarium
  • Natural substrate
  • Wood and natural decorations
  • Real aquatic plants
  • Filter and basic equipment
  • Carefully selected fish according to ethical and sustainable criteria

Take Home Experience

At the end of the activity, each child brings home the aquarium created during the workshop, together with clear care instructions.

After the Workshop

The learning journey continues online through the official BAP platform.

  • Aquarium setup refinement
  • Maintenance over time
  • Responsible fish care
  • Educational follow-up content
  • Family support resources
