Río Shanusi, Río Huallaga affluent, Yurimaguas, Peru

Sponsored by

Peru, Loreto, Yurimaguas

The 200L aquarium represents a part of the Huallaga River bank as it passes through Yurimaguas, Peru, and where the Shanusi River flows into the river. It is a rocky area, with many fallen tree branches and little vegetation where our protagonists, Apistogramma baenschi and Nannostomus marginatus flutter about. It is a shallow area with little water current.

Aquarium description

Set-up date

Aquarium decoration

To set up the aquarium, I used thin and elongated branches, river stones of different glanurometries and thin, clear substrate. I also had different botanicals such as leaves and seeds, all purchased at a professional aquarium store.

I composed all this in such a way to recreate part of the river bank with a main rock where different roots of the submerged vegetation fall, I composed the other rocks in such a way to make different caves for the shelter of the Apistogramma.

Aquarium equipment
  • Filtration of an Oase Biomaster 600 filter with built-in heater, with five baskets, all of
  • them filled with Neo Media biological material and sponges of different thicknesses.
  • Transparent Neo Flow pipes Chihiros slim 120 for lighting.
Automated fan to maintain temperature on 24-25°C.
Fish care

I tried to recreate a shallow part of the river bank with plenty of rock where the Apistogramma delight and the Otocinclus feed on all the decomposition and algae that are created on the rocks. The Nannostomus, on the other hand, look more at the surface looking for food among the floating plants.

I feed all types of commercial food, both frozen and dry. At least once a week I feed them with newly hatched brine shrimp and mosquito larvae that I keep myself.

Plant care

The plants I maintain do not require much maintenance. The Hydrocleys sp. without any maintenance – every week grows a new leaf. The water flow in the aquarium is adjusted as in Nature.

Water care

It is an aquarium that I try to maintain without much work. I only do very small water changes every 15-20 days. With the change I introduce a dose of Seachem Prime antichlorine marked by the manufacturer.

When I see that the pipes are too dirty I clean them. When changing the water I clean the pre-filter sponges.
