BAP Expert Heiko Blessin

Heiko Blessin was born in 1961 on the sunny island of Tenerife, and he has been living in Germany since the age of two. At the age of 9, he got his first aquarium as a gift and since then this hobby has become a part of his life.

While studying biology at university, he worked in the largest aquarium shop in Hamburg; later, he began his career as a professor at the University of Hamburg, and after his brief teaching experience he started to work for a large aquarium manufacturing company.

For 19 years, Heiko has been leading the marketing department and research expeditions at JBL. The yearly expeditions investigate tropical habitats to enhance our knowledge of many natural habitats and the biology of our aquarium fishes, in order to breed the animals in captivity.

As a biologist, underwater photographer and diver, Heiko has also studied biotopes in over 70 countries and documented them in many journals and on the JBL homepage. He is a very appreciated speaker as an expert of freshwater and seawater environments, kown all around the world. When Heiko is not underwater, he enjoys motorcycling on race tracks and is also active as a race instructor.
