Since his childhood, Stefano Valdesalici fell in love with nature, keeping fishes and pets. He became passionate about killifishes when first saw one at the age of 17 years old. With time, his amateur passion for killies grew into professional interest. That is why, after concluding his technical studies (expert in electronics), Stefano Valdesalici went to the University of Parma where he studied biology.

Even though he worked successfully for more than 20 years as an R&D manager in a company that produces professional stainless steel cleaning equipment, in the ichthyological field Stefano was able to travel and did many fish collecting trips, looking for killifish species in America (Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, USA, Cuba,…), Africa (Nigeria, Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Mozambique, Madagascar, Seychelles,…), Asia (Taiwan, Thailand,…).

Stefano published articles about killifishes in many popular fish magazines and more than 40 scientific papers, also with new descriptions. Over the years he hold lectures about ichthyological surveys and killifishes in Italy, in many European counties and in the USA.
Today, Stefano is collaborating with different researchers, universities, and museums all over the world. He has been the editor and chairman of the Italian Killifish Association (www.aik.it) since about 20 years. He is also a member of the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) and a member of the Freshwater Fish Specialist Group.
