Patuca River, Honduras

Sponsored by

Honduras, Central America, Raití

At a bend in the Patuca River, we find branches and roots of a tree which leaves a perfect refuge for a group of Astyanax fasciatus, some Parachromis managuensis and some Amatitlania nigrofasciata.

The ground is muddy, with some stones polished by water erosion. We find some leaves that the current cannot carry away.  We are surrounded by trees, such as Quercus sp. and Psidium sp.

Surrounding area

Surrounded by rocks and jungle, we find a very green area with a lot of vegetation.

Underwater landscape

Fishes:

  • Parachromis managuense
  • Amatitlania nigrofasciata
  • Astyanax fasciatus

The bottom is muddy with rocks eroded by water. Also, we find different types of branches and roots.

Threats to ecology

Deforestation is destroying the river and the biotopes of all Rio Patuca. The situation there is quite serious and with a lot of contamination.

Comment by the expert

Juan M. Artigas Azas: There is an incomplete list of species found in Patuca River.

Jairo Arroyave: Research on the BIN is very basic and without depth; there is virtually no information about the biodiversity of this particular biotope, nor is there photos or videos of the underwater habitat in nature. This is unfortunate because this makes it challenging to assess visually the comformity of the BIN with the BAM.
