Heros cf. efasciatus is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish typical of tropical areas. This species is native to Rio Negro or Amazon River in South America. Today, it is present in the Amazon River basin, across Brazil, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, and Peru.

It was also found in lentic environment such as zones of flooded grounds, as well as estuaries where the tidal current is notable, along the banks with thick riverine vegetation.
