The 288 litres biotope aquarium shows a fragment of the floodplain of the Odra River (Łęgi Odrzańskie). Above the water there is lush marsh vegetation – mainly species of the Carex genus. The fish swim among the visible roots and sunken grasses. The gentle movement of the water ensures the right amount of oxygen.

Aquarium decoration

All materials that the aquarium presents were collected from the natural environment. Substrate (about 80 l) collected from the floodplain. Mainly silt and organic matter, willow fine roots, swamp plants.

Aquarium equipment

Filtration – Aquael Fan 2 450 l/h set to minimum flow. Strong aeration. Lighting 2x Halogen LED 50W 3500 lum. 4000K. No heating.

Fish care

Fish:

Gobio gobio
Gasterosteus aculeatus
Alburnus sp.

Feeding 3 times a day with frozen foods and live insect larvae. Water change 40% every week.

Plant care

Plants: Circaea lutetiana, Carex riparia, Carex paniculatae, Juncus effusus.

11 hours of light. No fertilizer. Plants are placed in a natural substrate which ensures lush healthy growth and flowering.

Alexey Malyshev: Very good work. When the fish grow up, their number will have to be reduced for a given tank volume.

Gireg Allain: Beautiful aquarium very aesthetic and perfectly landscaped. It represents very well what one expects to see underwater when one sees the surrounding landscape. The decor of fine willow roots and dead grass is perfectly realized in a perfectly natural atmosphere. The filtration can be slightly increased to avoid too many suspended particles. The Alburnus are going to grow, so we’ll probably have to take some of them off. Three-spined Sticklebacks (Gasterosteus aculeatus) are beautiful fish, especially during the breeding season, with a very interesting behavior to observe in aquarium. One remark concerns the substrate which is very thick on the sides and can constitute a long-term threat. Very, very good success!
