This 300L aquarium recreates a flooded, slow-moving riverbank habitat of the Rio Nanay near Iquitos. The focus is on blackwater aesthetics, simulating the tannin-rich waters and root-filled environments where fish seek refuge.
For the decoration, I used fine-grained white sand as the substrate. The bottom is covered with rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis) leaves, various seeds scattered across the substrate, and several oak branches.
I also added an oak trunk, which serves as both a focal decorative element and a refuge for the fish.
At the back of the aquarium, I placed a palm leaf that conceals the heater while also providing additional shelter for the fish.
Equipment
To keep the aquarium healthy, I change approximately 30% of the water every week and add tannins to maintain the dark, blackwater appearance.
Fish
Change 30% of the water once a week. Inspect the internal components of the filter every three months.
