Brazil, Amazonas, Barcelos
This 86L aquarium boasts species of fish found thriving here among the maze of roots and downed branches in the shallows of a tiny section of flooded woodland not far from the city of Barcelos. The Cardinal tetra (Paracheirodon axelrodi), perhaps the most well-known of these, takes centre stage for the majority of this movie, its unmistakable neon blues and reds strikingly contrasted with the tea-colored water.
Igarapé do Daracua’s setting is typical of a variety of shallow, blackwater habitats that can be found throughout the Amazon and its tributaries, particularly the Rio Negro in Brazil and the Orinoco in Colombia and Venezuela. The water is warm at 30°C, very acidic (pH 6.0 in this aquarium), and completely devoid of minerals.
Additionally, the water contains a sizable amount of particulate organic matter, which many fish and invertebrates use as food.
