What is an
AQUATIC BIOTOPE?

To set-up the correct BIOTOPE AQUARIUM, we need to understand first what a BIOTOPE is.

The English loanword derives from the German word โ€˜Biotopโ€™, which in turn came from Greek, bios=โ€˜lifeโ€™ or โ€˜organismโ€™ and topos=โ€˜placeโ€™. A BIOTOPE is an area of uniform environmental conditions providing living place for a specific assemblage of plants and animals.

When we refer to an aquatic BIOTOPE IN NATURE, we talk about a living space, where many different organisms like fish, shrimps, snails, and plants form a biological community. They interact and depend on each other.

This fascinating behaviour can be observed in aquarium. If it is a BIOTOPE AQUARIUM.

Why? Because BIOTOPE AQUARIUM is the closest possible replication of the natural environment, micro-ecosystem created in your house. It is a perfect symbiosis between scientific research and aquaristic passion. AUTHENTIC, UNIQUE, ALIVE.

In todayโ€™s industrialized and globalized world, many aquatic species are struggling to survive in the wild. In BIOTOPE AQUARIUM they have a chance.

That is why the BIOTOPE AQUARIUM Project was born. This is a place where everyone can learn how to build a correct BIOTOPE AQUARIUM where fishes, shrimps, and snails show their natural behaviour and most beautiful colours. Because they feel fine. THEY FEEL AT HOME.

A BIOTOPE IN NATURE is a complex ecosystem that is in constant change โ€“ not only from season to season, but also from day to night. The replication of BIOTOPES IN NATURE, the process of creation of an authentic BIOTOPE AQUARIUM MODEL, has two important goals:

1. Educational โ€“ as a didactic tool of field research it helps understand how Nature works in a particular location in a certain period of time. In the end, we can only protect what we understand.

2. Applied knowledge โ€“ using the knowledge acquired by studying each particular natural habitat to create a stable and viable ecosystem in such a limited space, which must function with the least possible maintenance interventions for the longest possible amount of time.
