This biotope aquarium is inspired by the Ciliwung River ecosystem in Depok, Indonesia, and aims to raise awareness about local biodiversity and the environmental degradation threatening it. The setup faithfully recreates the river’s natural habitat using authentic materials – stones, sand, driftwood, bamboo, and leaves – collected directly from the river.

Its most striking feature is the accurate representation of the Ciliwung River’s underwater landscape, showcasing native fish species that are rarely seen in home aquariums. The aquarium merges natural beauty with ecological storytelling, drawing attention to the urgent need to protect polluted urban rivers and the life they support.

Comment by the expert

Heok Hee Ng: No BIN, so score is zero here. The fish species listed is not entirely accurate. I do not see Hemibagrus nemurus or Mystus gulio, and the only catfish I see is Mystus nigriceps. I also see a Pangio species not mentioned in the BAM description. The shrimps are Macrobrachium, not Caridina.

Greg Martin: BIN missing. The layout feels somewhat disorganized and could benefit from a closer consideration of the natural spatial relationships between rock and wood, as typically observed in flowing aquatic environments.
