Venezuela, Bolivarian Republic of, Amazonas, Atabapo
This aquarium represents a morichal habitat found in the state of Amazonas, Venezuela near the town of San Fernando de Atabapo. The moriche palms that grow in this densely forested area give the name “Morichal” to this tropical paradise. Roots, fallen leaves, and branches litter the fine white silica sand, providing the ideal habitat to a wide range of species in the crystal clear acidic waters of this morichal, many of which can also be found in the black waters of the Atabapo.
For this aquarium, I have chosen just two species of fish to represent a small area of the natural biotope. Adding more fish would result in lower water quality. The effect of a large school of Cardinals set against a backlit translucent azure blue background, gives an instant tropical effect. The riparian vegetation continues the theme above water and provides shelter by way of its roots.
