The surrounding area consists of dense lowland tropical rainforest within the Upper Guinea region of Sierra Leone. The habitat is characterized by high humidity, seasonal rainfall, and extensive canopy cover. The forest floor is covered with decomposing organic matter such as leaves, branches, and fallen plant material.

The waterbody is typically located in a shallow depression or low-lying area where rainwater accumulates. The immediate surroundings have little human disturbance, with dense vegetation and natural forest conditions surrounding the pool.

Underwater landscape

The underwater landscape is dominated by a thick layer of decomposing leaf litter forming the primary substrate. Beneath the organic layer lies fine sediment composed of silt and sand.

Scattered throughout the habitat are small twigs, branches, and submerged root structures, creating a complex but irregular environment. Aquatic vegetation is minimal or absent, with most structural complexity provided by organic debris rather than plant growth.

The water is tannin-stained, reducing visibility and creating a dark, subdued environment. This habitat supports surface-oriented species such as the Clown Killifish, which uses the leaf litter and debris for shelter and feeding.

Threats to ecology

The primary threats to this biotope include deforestation and habitat degradation caused by agricultural expansion and logging activities. The removal of forest canopy can alter light penetration, temperature, and water chemistry, affecting these sensitive habitats.

Additional threats include water pollution from human activities and changes in land use, which may degrade water quality and disrupt the natural processes of organic decomposition that characterize blackwater systems.

Because these habitats are small, shallow, and often seasonal, they are particularly vulnerable to environmental disturbance and can be easily affected by changes in surrounding conditions.
