Hypselecara coryphenoides is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish that lives in tropical, black waters, typically stained a dark brown with tannins from decaying organic material and often highly acidic. This species inhabits forested areas, in sluggish tributaries off the main river channel.

Today, it is present across South America. It is found in the Amazon River basin, in the Negro, Trombetas, Tapajós, Maués and Uatumã rivers. Also, it inhabits the tributaries of the upper Orinoco River, and the Aguaro River basin.
