Poecilia mexicana is a benthopelagic fish that live in fresh and brackish waters. Typical of tropical climates, it is native to Orizaba, southern Mexico. This species occurs in warm springs and their effluents, canals and weedy ditches, and stream pools. Some populations of Poecilia mexicana were found in caves.
