Behaviour description

Peaceful labyrinth fish like other gourami family they goes to surface to gulp air, they are also known to be territorial during courtship and spawning period, the male are the ones which takes cares their youngs.

The Chocolate Gourami prefer slow current water, they also prefer aquarium water depth of 15-40cm, this fish can be kept along with other fish in the tank such as rasbora and barbs however it is better to keep them with smaller size fish since they don’t compete food with the Chocolate Gourami.

They inhabit very acidic water that has no plant growth because of low mineral content – pH range of 4-6 and hardness values of 0.5-6 DH.

Sexual dimorphism

Adult males exhibit a uniformly straight lower jaw profile and an overall more acuminate head shape than females, in which the lower jaw is slightly rounded due to the presence of distensible skin that is expanded during mouthbrooding.

However, it is rather difficult to sex Sphaerichthys osphromenoides. Probably because there have been so few spawning in captivity.

Nutrition in Nature

Mainly fed on small crustaceans, worms and zooplankton.
