It was in the beginning of the 1980s that I was able to penetrate for the first time the Daríen, in Panama, also known as The Gap, a place that no white man had been able to cross and where the longest road on earth – the Trans-American Highway – came to an halt: it was never completed because of The Gap. The Gap is a gigantic swamp area, impenetrable jungle infested by malaria – at least this is what it was during the last century…
