Just south of where I live in Parma, there is the birthplace of the first explorer of the lower Omo River, Vittorio Bottego (1860-1897). He was an Italian army officer and also one of the first western explorers of Jubaland in the Horn of Africa (now part of Somalia). In 1897, Bottego, sick with fever, ascended with his men to the river, lacking provisions. In the course of the expedition eleven of his men died of hunger, two died from exhaustion, and another two were drowned while hunting hippopotamuses
