The very first expedition to Mozambique with the research and collection of also freshwater fishes was made by the German naturalist Wilhelm Karl Hartwich Peters (1815 -1883), and published in the period between 1852-82 as Naturwissenschaftliche Reise nach Mossambique… in den Jahren 1842 bis 1848 ausgeführt. He was also curator at the Berlin Zoological Museum.

In September 1842 he travelled to Mozambique via Angola. He returned to Berlin in 1848 with an enormous collection of natural history specimens and had researched 51 freshwater species…
