PERU: Back to Peru, Part 4

By Heiko Bleher

Amigo told me some stories, as we filled up all containers: “In this region of the Pichis and Pachitea we plant mainly corn and harvest up to one million tone per year, for about 10 years now. Everyone plants it, you will see those plantations along the rivers and unfortunately this results in large erosions. The riverbeds were once narrow and deep, and easy to travel on, today they are broad and shallow. The erosions have filled in its bed and now we can hardly travel with the boat on it, except during the rainy season.”
