Tanzania, Rukwa, Kipili
This aquarium recreates the rock–sand transition zone of the Kipili Basin in Lake Tanganyika, a habitat characterised by scattered rock formations interspersed with open sandy areas. The design aims to reproduce the spatial relationship between these contrasting microhabitats, which provide shelter, feeding grounds, and breeding sites for Telmatochromis vittatus.
The layout was developed based on underwater photographs and field observations. Large rocks were positioned to create crevices and territories, while extensive open sand areas were maintained to reflect the natural substrate composition. Vallisneria spiralis was included as a plant element, representing marginal vegetation that may occur in transitional areas influenced by coastal inputs.
Although constrained by the aquarium’s dimensions, the composition preserves the key ecological features of the natural biotope. The result is a simplified but representative model that emphasises habitat structure and species behaviour.
