Kayan River tributary, Bulungan, North Kalimantan, Indonesia

Sponsored by

Bahrain, Tanjung Selor, Bulungan

We found the images of the biotope that inspired us – a river mainly based on rock and with some occasional pieces of wood. In the habitat there was no excessive amount of organic matter so we used few botanicals.

Aquarium decoration

We used tumbled rock that is as similar to the place in question – it is of different granulometries and with the same geological composition, so this does not alter the parameters of the water.

The driftwood, due to its texture, perfectly recreates a fallen branch dragged by the stream.

We used muddy water to speed up the maturation process of the tank. In the construction of hardscape, we focused the perspective as if we had an upstream view of the river, in this we also left some caves to offer them the necessary shelter.

Aquarium equipment
  • Filter: Sicce Space Eco 300-900/ltrs/h
  • Ilumination: Hyper spot
  • Filtration: Matrix, Neo media soft
Fish care

To keep them, I recommend using tanks of 70/100L with a lid, as they are prone to jumping. Occasionally, the tank can be equipped with some vegetation and minimal leaf litter, as they do not like an acidic pH in the water column. It is important to equip the aquarium with a small internal or external filter, as these animals require some water movement. I recommend high-quality lighting to enhance their coloration; a dimmable LED light will provide the appropriate light intensity for Betta Antuta, as it prefers subdued lighting.

Feeding: The diet of Betta sp. Antuta/Bulungan is based on proteins and fats from live food (tubifex, red larvae, cricket n.2, mealworms Tenebrio molitor). Although they are reluctant to accept dry food, they will eventually do so without problems. We recommend the DKI line from Easy Reef, as it is primarily based on shrimp meal, which is a natural part of their diet in the wild.

Maintenance: Water changes will be done weekly at a rate of 40%.

Water care

The glass is cleaned twice a week, water changes are generally done once a week, organic matter is siphoned once a month, and the filter is cleaned every 4 months.

Comment by the expert

Heiko Blessin:

Heok Hee Ng: Reasonably accurate reconstruction. Could do with a little more diversity in biotic fauna, perhaps adding some Rasboras and/or aquatic invertebrates.

Greg Martin: A beautifully recreated biotope.
