This 280-litre aquarium recreates the rocky reef habitat of Pombo Rocks, located along the eastern shoreline of Lake Malawi, Tanzania. The underwater landscape is characterized by wave-exposed bare rock in shallow areas, transitioning into a mixed rocky-sandy zone at depths of approximately 3-7 metres. Numerous rock crevices and caves provide the complex three-dimensional structure typical of Mbuna habitats.

The aquarium was designed specifically to house Chindongo demasoni, a highly distinctive cichlid endemic to the Pombo Rocks and Ndumbi Point region. Although it is now one of the most common species in the ornamental fish trade and one of the most recognized Lake Malawi cichlids, its natural distribution remains extremely restricted, occurring only in a limited number of isolated rocky reef habitats.

The aquascape features a dominant central reef structure positioned in the middle and rear sections of the aquarium, extending from the substrate to just below the water surface. This arrangement replicates the large offshore granite formations found at Pombo Rocks. Smaller rocks are distributed around the main structure, creating a natural transition toward the sandy areas and providing additional shelter and territorial boundaries.

A small group of Chindongo demasoni is maintained within this habitat simulation to observe their complex social interactions, territorial behaviour, and natural grazing activity typical of wild Mbuna cichlids.

The aquarium features rockwork that closely reflects the geological characteristics of the Pombo Rocks reef habitat in Lake Malawi, with many stones collected directly from the natural environment. The arrangement recreates the irregular rocky substrate and wave-eroded surfaces typical of shallow surge zones. Carefully stacked rocks of different sizes form the structural framework of the aquascape, representing the large offshore granite formations, vertical rock faces, and natural crevice systems characteristic of the Pombo Rocks reef.

The substrate consists of fine, light-coloured sand, representing the natural transition zone between rocky reefs and sandy lakebeds found within Lake Malawi’s littoral environments.

The aquascape was designed to reproduce the shallow rocky reef habitat of Pombo Rocks, Lake Malawi, Tanzania, emphasizing exposed bedrock, narrow fissures, caves, and the natural interaction between rock and sand. No aquatic plants have been included, reflecting the naturally vegetation-free rocky habitats occupied by wild Mbuna cichlids.

A solid lake-blue background enhances the perception of depth and open water, reflecting the exceptional clarity and expansive character of Lake Malawi while maintaining visual continuity with the natural biotope.

The rock structure incorporates numerous vertical surfaces, ledges, and caves of different sizes and depths, reproducing the complex three-dimensional habitat structure found at approximately 3–7 metres depth. This design provides shelter, territorial boundaries, and behavioural opportunities for Chindongo demasoni, reflecting the ecological requirements of this endemic rock-dwelling cichlid.

Aquarium equipment

The aquarium is equipped with a large-capacity sump filtration system powered by a 30 W Aquatic Time intelligent controllable return pump, providing a flow rate of 2,500 L/h. The system ensures stable water circulation, efficient mechanical filtration, and strong biological filtration to maintain optimal water quality.

Fish care

The aquarium is designed with an abundance of rocky crevices, vertical cliff faces, caves, and ledges, providing territorial boundaries, secure refuges, and natural foraging areas. This structure recreates the habitat conditions of wild rock-dwelling cichlids, allowing the fish to graze on aufwuchs, establish territories, and patrol their surroundings as they would in their natural environment.

Water depth, flow dynamics, and rock placement have been carefully arranged to reflect the shallow, wave-swept littoral zones of Lake Malawi. These conditions encourage natural behaviour, territorial interactions, vibrant coloration, and high activity levels typical of Mbuna cichlids.

The aquarium houses a group of eight Chindongo demasoni, allowing the fish to establish a natural social hierarchy and individual territories. Water temperature is maintained within the species’ natural range of 22-27°C (72-81°F). Approximately one-third of the aquarium water is replaced weekly to maintain excellent water quality and stable conditions.

The fish are fed a diet adapted to the nutritional requirements of rock-dwelling Mbuna cichlids, with a strong emphasis on plant-based foods to support their natural grazing behaviour. Brine shrimp are offered occasionally as a supplementary protein source. Natural algae growth is encouraged on the rock surfaces, providing additional grazing opportunities and further enhancing the ecological realism of the habitat.
