Lake Malawi is a vast freshwater rift lake located at the southern end of the East African Rift System. It is the third-largest lake in Africa by surface area, the ninth-largest lake in the world, and the second-deepest lake on the African continent. Shared by Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique, the lake is internationally recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and remarkable diversity of endemic cichlid fishes.

This unique ecosystem inspired the creation of the biotope aquarium, which focuses on a small rocky reef habitat known as Pombo Rocks. The habitat model was selected to represent the natural environment of one of Lake Malawi’s most specialized cichlids, the Demason’s cichlid (Chindongo demasoni). With its extremely limited distribution, restricted to a small number of isolated rocky reefs including Pombo Rocks, this species represents a true habitat specialist and endemic component of the lake’s unique evolutionary history.

Geographical and Environmental Context: Pombo Rocks is located in Songea District, Ruvuma Region, Tanzania, along the eastern shoreline of the northern section of Lake Malawi, just north of the Ruhuhu River delta.

Shoreline Landscape: The surrounding terrestrial environment consists of gently sloping tropical savanna with scattered rural settlements. Extensive agricultural activity, particularly maize and tobacco cultivation, dominates the upstream landscape, while significant deforestation has affected nearby hillsides. The immediate shoreline is characterized by muddy flats, with the northern river mouth experiencing continuous sediment input from the Ruhuhu River.

Aquatic Habitat: Pombo Rocks is an offshore granite reef complex situated several hundred metres from the shoreline. The reef connects southward with the rocky habitat of Ndumbi Point and transitions northward into broad, sediment-influenced shallows affected by the Ruhuhu River outflow. Fully exposed to the open lake, the reef experiences direct influence from prevailing winds and wave action.

The habitat consists of exposed granite formations, rocky surfaces, and crevice systems that provide shelter and feeding areas for specialized rock-dwelling cichlids. During the dry season, water clarity is exceptionally high, with underwater visibility typically ranging from 8–18 m. During the rainy season, increased sediment discharge from the Ruhuhu River reduces visibility, particularly on the northern side of the reef, where it may decrease to approximately 3-6 m.

Physical and Chemical Conditions: The exposed position of the reef results in continuous wind-driven water movement, promoting strong circulation and high dissolved oxygen levels. During periods of intense wind, waves break over the granite formations, creating characteristic areas of white foam and surface turbulence.

Surface temperatures range from approximately 23–26°C during the dry season and 27–30°C during the rainy season. The water remains consistently alkaline, with pH values between 7.8 and 8.5 and conductivity ranging from 210–260 μS/cm, reflecting the moderately hard to hard freshwater conditions typical of Lake Malawi.

Human Influence and Conservation Concerns: The area is influenced by local human activities, including small-scale fishing, ornamental fish collection, and shoreline use by nearby communities. Fishing boats and collection activities occur around the reef throughout the year. Additional disturbances include sand extraction near the river mouth, which contributes to localized habitat alteration and increased turbidity.

Despite these pressures, Pombo Rocks remains an important habitat due to its highly specialized rocky reef environment and its association with the endemic cichlid Chindongo demasoni.

Underwater landscape

Substrate: The substrate at Pombo Rocks is dominated by massive exposed granite bedrock, large boulders, and extensive networks of rocky crevices, with almost no accumulation of fine sand or silt. Sandy substrates occur only in the deeper transitional zone below approximately 7 metres, where the rocky reef gradually merges into open sandy flats.

Reef Structure: The reef is composed of steep granite formations characterised by numerous cracks, fissures, and small caves. These structures provide essential shelter, territorial boundaries, and breeding sites for rock-dwelling cichlids. The exposed rock surfaces are covered by a thin layer of periphytic algae and aufwuchs, which represents the primary natural food source for Mbuna cichlids.

Depth Zonation

  • 1-4 metres: The main habitat zone of Chindongo demasoni, consisting of exposed granite bedrock with strong water movement and high oxygen availability.
  • 4-7 metres: A transitional habitat where rocky substrate gradually becomes mixed with isolated patches of sand.
  • Below 7 metres: The substrate becomes predominantly fine sand, and Chindongo demasoni is no longer present.
  • Below approximately 40 metres: A pronounced thermocline creates a rapid decrease in temperature and dissolved oxygen levels, producing conditions unsuitable for shallow-water rock-dwelling cichlids.

Underwater Fauna: The reef supports dense populations of Mbuna rock-dwelling cichlids, together with freshwater snails, periphytic algae communities, and diverse benthic invertebrates. The adjacent sandy habitats support different ecological communities, including sand-dwelling cichlids such as Aulonocara species and Utaka (Copadichromis spp.), creating a clear separation between rocky and sandy habitat specialists.

Threats to ecology

Commercial Collection for the Ornamental Fish Trade: Chindongo demasoni has an extremely restricted natural distribution, occurring only on a small number of isolated rocky reefs. For several decades, wild individuals—including mouthbrooding females carrying eggs or fry—have been collected by divers for the international ornamental fish trade. This continued harvesting has reduced natural breeding populations and contributed to the species’ classification as Vulnerable.

Overfishing and Destructive Fishing Practices: Local fisheries commonly use fine-mesh gill nets around reef areas, which can disturb rocky habitats, damage algae-covered surfaces, and disrupt the crevices used as shelter and breeding sites by rock-dwelling cichlids. Although less frequent today, destructive practices such as blast fishing have historically occurred in parts of the region, causing damage to reef structures and direct mortality among shallow-water fish communities.

Agricultural Runoff and Sedimentation: Deforestation and agricultural expansion within the Ruhuhu River catchment have increased soil erosion and sediment runoff. During the rainy season, large quantities of sediment enter Lake Malawi, where they can accumulate on rocky reefs, covering algae-rich surfaces and reducing feeding habitat for Mbuna cichlids. Increased turbidity also affects light penetration and may alter the ecological conditions of shallow reef environments.

Water Pollution: Agricultural runoff introduces nutrients and chemicals into the lake, potentially contributing to localized eutrophication. In addition, untreated domestic wastewater and shoreline activities from nearby communities may affect local water quality and gradually alter the stable alkaline conditions characteristic of Lake Malawi.

Boat Traffic and Human Disturbance: Regular boat activity can resuspend sediments and disturb shallow reef habitats. Diving activities associated with ornamental fish collection may also interfere with breeding territories, spawning sites, and natural behavioural patterns of territorial cichlids.

Extremely Restricted Habitat and Limited Resilience: The highly localized distribution of Chindongo demasoni makes the species particularly vulnerable to environmental changes. Because it depends on a limited number of specialized rocky reef habitats, degradation caused by sedimentation, overcollection, pollution, or habitat disturbance can rapidly lead to local population declines.
