Rawa Pening Swamp, Central Java, Indonesia

Sponsored by

Indonesia, Central Java, Ambarawa, Sumurup

This biotope recreates the ecosystem of Rawa Pening Lake, featuring a sand-based substrate that reflects the natural texture of the environment. Within this habitat, both flora and fauna thrive.

The primary plant species is umbrella grass (Cyperus alternifolius), characterized by its long stems and dangling roots. The fauna includes freshwater needlefish (Dermogenys pusilla), tinheads (Aplocheilus panchax), swamp bettas (Trichopsis vittata), and humpback shrimp.

The roots of the umbrella grass provide essential shelter for small fish, protecting them from natural predators. This plant typically grows in moist, slightly waterlogged soils, making it well suited to this biotope.

Aquarium information

Aquarium description

Set-up date
January, 2025
Aquarium decoration

The substrate consists of sandy soil that closely resembles the natural soil of this ecosystem, complemented by small stones for added texture. I selected umbrella grass as the primary plant, with its dangling root shoots creating a naturalistic look. Dry leaves and a touch of wild grass were also added to enhance the authenticity of the scene.

Aquarium equipment

Filtration:
The setup includes two Amara 503 hang-on filters. Each filter is equipped with white filter cotton at the front, followed by activated carbon and a bio-media section containing bacterial houses to support beneficial microbial growth.

Lighting:
The aquarium is illuminated using Kandila Day-Night 700 and Kandila S700 lights, providing a balanced light spectrum suitable for both plant growth and natural day-night simulation.

Fish care

The aquarium provides ample hiding places and replicates the natural habitat by maintaining a stable water temperature and ensuring a slow water flow.

Fish list:

  • Aplocheilus panchax (Aplocheilidae)
  • Dermogenys pusilla (Zenarhopteridae)
  • Trichopsis vittata (Osphronemidae)
Plant care

Umbrella grass is low-maintenance, requiring only sufficient water nutrients to grow and artificial lighting as a substitute for sunlight.

Wetland plant list:

  • Cyperus alternifolius (Cyperaaceae)
Water care

It is sufficient to change 20% of the aquarium’s total water volume once a week.
