This biotope represents a shallow, seasonally inundated floodplain margin connected to an agricultural drainage canal within the Chao Phraya River Basin. During the early wet season, rising water levels reconnect fragmented habitats, creating low-flow environments rich in organic material and structural complexity.
These marginal habitats are characterized by soft substrates composed of fine sediments, decomposing plant material, and scattered terrestrial debris. Emergent and amphibious vegetation colonize the banks, while submerged plants are sparse and irregularly distributed. Light penetration varies due to overhanging grasses and floating vegetation, creating a mosaic of shaded and illuminated areas.
Ecologically, these transitional zones are highly important, providing suitable breeding and feeding conditions for small labyrinth fishes such as Trichopsis pumila. These fish rely on dense marginal vegetation, calm water surfaces, and sheltered areas for reproduction and protection.
