Sponsored by

Viet Nam, Thừa Thiên-Huế, Huế

In the central region of Vietnam, nestled in the province of Thừa Thiên-Huế, lies a small river that is part of the Perfume River’s catchment area. This picturesque river flows through a landscape characterized by its proximity to the South China Sea, providing a vital water source for the region.

The river, composed of bedrock, features highly oxygenated and crystal-clear waters, with no aquatic plants within the river itself, only those on the surrounding lands.

The area around this river is known for its rich biodiversity, with lush forests and a variety of flora and fauna. Agriculture thrives here, with rice paddies and other crops benefiting from the fertile land and abundant water supply. Additionally, the local economy includes some industrial activities, although they are carefully managed to preserve the natural beauty and ecological balance of this unique region.

The Perfume River or also known as Sông Hương, located in central Vietnam, flows through the province of Thừa Thiên-Huế, encompassing a diverse landscape. Originating from the Truong Son mountain range, the river is fed by tributaries such as the Tả Trạch and Hữu Trạch Rivers, which sustain its flow through a region characterized by highlands, forests, and fertile agricultural lands. The basin experiences a monsoonal climate, marked by significant rainfall during the wet season, which replenishes the river and supports its ecosystem.

Ecologically, the Perfume River’s basin is home to a rich diversity of flora and fauna, benefiting from the river’s clear and oxygenated waters. This biodiversity is crucial for both aquatic and terrestrial species, contributing to the region’s ecological health and local livelihoods.

Culturally and historically, the Perfume River holds immense significance as it flows past Huế, the former imperial capital of Vietnam. The river and its surroundings are adorned with numerous historical landmarks and cultural sites, reflecting Vietnam’s deep-rooted heritage and attracting visitors from around the world to explore its scenic beauty and storied past.

Underwater landscape

The underwater ecosystem of this river features crystal-clear, highly oxygenated waters with strong rapids, characterized by a bedrock structure where loaches find shelter and food. There are no loose stones or aquatic plants in the river, as these are carried away by its strong currents.

This ecosystem is dynamic; during monsoon seasons, the waters become even stronger, turbulent, and sediment-laden, reducing visibility. Fish inhabiting this habitat have evolved to adapt to these conditions. Sewellia lineolata loaches, for instance, are opportunistic feeders consuming microorganisms carried by the river’s waters and also the biofilm covering all the rocks within this aquatic ecosystem.

Threats to ecology

The rivers in the Perfume River area face various threats to their ecology. One major concern is pollution from agricultural runoff, industrial discharges, and urban waste, which degrade water quality and harm aquatic life.

Deforestation and land-use changes contribute to erosion, increasing sedimentation that can smother riverbed habitats and reduce water clarity.

Overfishing and unsustainable fishing practices further deplete fish populations, disrupting the river’s food web.

Climate change exacerbates these issues, with altered rainfall patterns affecting river flows and exacerbating flood and drought cycles.

These combined threats pose significant challenges to maintaining the ecological health and biodiversity of the rivers in the Perfume River basin.
