One hill streams of North Zhejiang Grand Canyon is chosed as the sample of our biotope aquarium. Thousands of North Zhejiang Grand’s hill streams converge into the Huangpu River, and then Flow into the East China Sea.

This freshwater hill stream is the home to Acrossocheilus labiatus, Opsariichthys evolans, Cobitis taenia Linnaeus, Acheilognathus rhombeus and many other fishes.

The North Zhejiang Grand Canyon is known as the “Qinghai-Tibet Plateau” in Zhejiang Province. It is full of strange peaks and rocks, green ponds and waterfalls, and boundless bamboo sea.

Underwater landscape

After the rainy season, the stones exposed on the water show the white color, while the underwater stones are beige. There were no leaves around the stones, instead there are a great deal of gravel and sands. Due to the waterfull lash the stones, there are a large amount of algae in the water. It caused the hill steam water become blue-green color.

The aquatic vegetation consists mainly of Rabdosia serra, Ludwigia prostrata, Miscanthus floridulus, Blumea balsamifera and many other not identified plants.

Threats to ecology

North Zhejiang Grand Canyon is located in a remote area. It can only be reached by car.

North Zhejiang Grand Canyon belongs to country Anji , which is the place with the most bamboo species in the world.

When bamboo resources and tourism are overdeveloped, the ecology of the water is polluted.

In our conversation with the local people, Opsariichthys evolans and Acrossocheilus labiatus were used as their food. But now the number of fish is greatly reduced due to ecological damage. Fortunately, the local forest police have begun to protect the existing ecology. Catching fish is forbided now.

Comment by the expert

Fan Li: The observation and study on the species in habitat was not so accurate, e.g. Acheilognathus rhombeus can not live in upper stream habitat.
