Sungai Kelbut, Jawa Tengah, Indonesia

Indonesia, Pulau Jawa, Jawa Tengah

Sungai Kelbut is found just below the Watu overlap dam, which is located in the East of the village. The water of this river flows from the Kelbut spring, the distance from the spring to the dam is about 200m. The Kelbut spring can be defined the source of the river, because in summer there is no other water flowing into the river except for the spring.

The environment in this river is charterized by many trees and bambo, which grows like wild grass and enriches the springs. In my biotope environment there are no aquatic plants. The water here is clear, during the rainy season the water turns brown due to flooding.

Animals such as apes still exist but are rarely seen. Trionychidae (softshell turtles) also still exist – they can be seen often, when sunbathing. The aquatic inhabitants are as follows: Rasbora argyrotaenia, Barbodes binotatus, Nemacheilus masyai, Xiphophorus hellerii (green swordtail fish), Macrobrachium rosenbergii, Viviparidae (river snails or mystery snails), Channa limbata.

Surrounding area

This biotope is located far from the village so that very few people pass through this place. In the surrounding area, there are only a few rice fields, maybe only a few hectares, most of the forest belongs to local residents.

Underwater landscape

The riverbed is very rocky with a predominance of slightly rounded and soft sand mixed with soil.

Fishes:

  • Rasbora argyrotaenia
  • Barbodes binotatus
  • Nemacheilus masyai
  • Xiphophorus hellerii (green swordtail fish – IAS)
  • Macrobrachium rosenbergii
  • Channa limbata
  • Cichlid (probably Oreochromis)
  • Catfish (not identified)

Molluscs:

  • Viviparidae (river snails or mystery snails)

Crustaceans:

  • Macrobrachium rosenbergii
Threats to ecology

The ecology of this stream and its fish fauna are very vulnerable because people catch fish by treating and bombing so that the types of fish species are decreasing – such as goby fish, for example.
